Ugly Duckling – fresh mode

Posted on: December 4, 2007

Native Tongue´s speaking, Ugly Duckling are bringing back the old school hip hop with every release and the debut EP is what the title promises: fresh! And can you get a better compliment in the game as being marked as fresh since KRS one taught us all about freshness? The lyrics from Dizzy and Andycat are smart and funny, but they´re not hip hop clowns. They take the music serious, but they´re able to laugh about themselves – a characteristic too many hip hop artist lost today. Young Einstein´s production is thick like butter, funky, jazzy relaxed beats with that old school vibe in the tradition of Jungle Brothers or A Tribe called Quest. Their music is not an imitation they just show their respect to artists they were influenced by. By the way, today that style of hip hop is often called old school, but it was the new school of the late 80s and early 90s, classifications change in time and use.

The whole music and drum beats are kept simple, really smooth and relaxed bass lines with only a few fine samples and the lyrics just flow perfectly along the beats, noz complicated yet refeshing. Just 2 turntables and 2 microfones, the basic idea of hip hop still works until today, just move the finger to the fader and let it explode.

From time to time I grab this EP, pull up the volume and move around on the bass, air scratching “simultaniously” with Young Einstein and smiling about the lyrics – old ones I already recognized or about new lines, ok, after listening to this EP for years there are no new lines to explore anymore. For 27 minutes Ugly Duckling take me to California under the warm sun. How refreshing!

D – Devastate, I – Impress, Z – Zestfully clean and fresh, another Z – that’s the zip code that I got, on the north side of town, and Y – Why not?
