Sleepwalker – sleepwalker

Posted on: December 3, 2007

Produced by Shuya Okino – the brother of Yosihiro Okino and together forming the Kyoto Jazz Massive, Acid Jazz legends from Japan, important like Kruder & Dorfmeister or Jazzanova – this has to be fine music and with no surprise the debut from the Sleepwalker quartet is a sureshot as you can expect. The groovy and fat bass from Toshitaka Shiratori brings the Jazz to the dancefloor, the heavy percussion by Nobuaki Fujii lets you shake your legs and move your hip. But with no doubt this record is also made for your living room or a lazy sunday afternoon, the piano improvisations of Hajime Yoshizawa, his dreamy moog soundscapes and the heavy Pharao Sanders influenced sax of Masato Nakamura, the whole band plays with a lot of heart and feel which guarantees wide variations within the 8 tracks, but always gives you an energy kick. And this mix of sensibility and power in the straight ahead jazz tunes remembers me of the 60s Coltrane quartet, reinvented in 2003 to bring jazz back to the clubs, away from nerdish old man who are acting like members of an exclusive club with secret knowledge. Sleepwalker are the deepest and one of the most talented combos of the current club jazz scene, which aims at the dancefloor, but never never loses any sense of depth or creativity from a jazz perspective.

Just a great album, enjoying every second of it. You bring us music from all over the world and i appreciate this, tired to see everything from the same countries: USA and UK.
Some variation is always good.
