Pete Philly & Perquisite – Mindstate

Posted on: September 29, 2007

Pete Philly & Perquisite from Amsterdam in the Netherlands are not the two most well-known names in the hip-hop game, but as a regular visitor of this blog you know Pete Philly from the smooth North West Metropolis EP. On this album MC Pete Philly teams up with producer Perquisite, who drops his groovy beats on the one hand and on the other is playing the cello. He started playing the cello when he was eight, and got to know his way around several classical jazz instruments along the way. Combined with his love for dusty breaks and bass beats, Perquisite is possibly one of the most surprising hip-hop producers of the last couple of years. Perquisite has an array of sounds at his disposal to create the right kind of vibe for a song and together both have put together a very passionate and emotional record in the tradition of the Native Tongue movement. Hip-hop, soul, 60’s psychedelia, and even classical music gently collide and collaborate in a breathtaking way.

Talib Kweli appears on the track “hope” and doesn´t hesitate to say about Pete Philly & Perquisite (their brand new album “Mystery Repeats” was released in the past days):

Musically, these boys are light-years ahead of the game.
