Buck 65 – square

Posted on: July 24, 2007

Three living legends, one topic: Hip Hop. Nas says “Hip Hop is dead“, KRS One and Marley Marl teach the opposite – Hip Hop lives. I think both are right in their own ways. Buck 65 is a proof for KRS One´s thesis for sure, in his hands hip hop lives because he is forming & transforming it. For example listen to the Hip Hop-Blues-Country-Folk-Clash on “Talkin’ Honky Blues“. Even better is Buck 65 aka Richard Tefry on “Square”, abstract composed song structures, intelligent sampling and a great sense for telling stories. RJD2? Dan the Automator? Yeah!

Square consists of four parts, each a conglomerat of songs and ideas melt into each other. This extravagant way of arranging an album prevents in a likeable way zapping from song to song – you need to focus on the whole square.

If you say it´s boring – listen to it once again! If you need faster songs – wait until your mood changes! But don´t be square.
