Jimmy Smith - root down

Feelin hectic? Listened to Zu for too many times? Ok relax, here is a jazz classic to calm down. If you don´t already have or know this, pick it up - essential one! Jimmy Smith was one of the first who introduced the organ to modern-jazz combos. He released several records on Blue Note and Verve, left his stamp on all with his revolutionary way to play the organ; greasy, nasty and funky all the way.

On “Root Down”, a livetake from Los Angeles 1972, Smith is less traditional. In the center his Hammond organ, sounding relaxed and laid back. The awesome rythm section with Buck Clarke (percussions) and Paul Humphrey on drums kicks a damn funky groove. Wilton Felder´s melodic bass lines stands out as ever and listen to this wonderful wah-wah-guitar in “For Everyone under the Sun”, Arthur Adams blends in beautifully. The Al Green Cover “Let´s stay together” offers you the soulful side of Jimmy Smith. And if you are not into jazz - the Beastie Boys sampled “Root Down” 1994 in their song of the same name. At least you know and love this one?
